Hereworth is committed to making itself accessible to deserving boys, providing opportunities for those with great character who will contribute positively to our school culture. These boys enrich Hereworth and bring welcome diversity. Boys who take up the opportunity of a scholarship do so knowing that such an opportunity brings responsibilities – to Hereworth, their families and themselves.
Hereworth offers a range of scholarships and bursaries for boys entering school in Year 6 and 7. Academic and Choral scholarships are awarded on merit.
Recipients of all other scholarships and bursaries must satisfy the overall criteria, which is that for financial reasons the applicant would not attend Hereworth without the help of a scholarship.
• The individual boy and his family must demonstrate a real commitment to wanting to be part of the Hereworth community, under the terms of our Mission Statement and aims.
• The applicant must be a good role model for others and be a good Hereworth citizen, both in school and in the wider community.
• Boys entering Year 7 will be given preference, although boys in Year 6 will also be considered.
Families can apply for more than one scholarship; however they are only eligible to receive one.
The Year 6 Academic Scholarship is awarded annually to boys in Year 5 (either at Hereworth or another school) at the time of the examination, to the value of 50% of tuition fees, tenable for 3 years.
The Year 7 Academic Scholarship is awarded to boys in Year 6 (either at Hereworth or another school) at the time of the examination, to the value of 50% of tuition fees, tenable for 2 years.
Choral Scholarships are available to boys entering Years 6 and 7. Choral Scholarship tests are similar to an individual audition, where boys are asked to sing a prepared piece of their choice, and one verse of the New Zealand national anthem. They must also undergo aural testing exercises. They may bring along the accompanying music if required.
To retain a Choral Scholarship, the student must belong to the Hereworth Choir for the duration of his time at the school.
If your child is interested, inclined, or in our Choir, it is worth consideration, and we encourage you to investigate further.
Year 7 Choral Scholarship
Awarded to encourage a boy with the most promising choiral ability. Awarded annually to boys in Year 6 (either at Hereworth or another school) at the time of the examination, to the value of 50% of tuition fees, tenable for 2 years. To be considered for this scholarship, a boy would be expected to show outstanding choral ability.
The Headmaster’s Scholarships are awarded to boys who demonstrate all-round ability in academics, arts, spirituality, culture and sport. He must also display leadership skills or potential in this area. These scholarships are up to the value of 30% of tuition and/or boarding fees.
The Old Boys’ Association has an annual Scholarship available to a boy starting in Year 7, for 50% of the tuition and/or boarding fees (if required), tenable for 2 years. The scholarship will be awarded to any boy who, in the opinion of the Old Boys’ Scholarship Committee, will benefit most from the opportunity of attending Hereworth. On completion of his time at Hereworth, the scholarship recipient will do his utmost to maintain the Hereworth values and traditions, and be proud to be a Hereworth Old Boy. This scholarship is open to all boys, not just sons of Old Boys.
The Board of Trustees also offers a limited number of bursaries each year to new families. This is in the form of confidential funding assistance and is on a case-by-case scenario. All discussions concerning funding are between the Headmaster and the family. Financial need is a prerequisite for these bursaries and evidence may be requested.
The decision as to who is awarded Bursaries remains at the Headmaster’s sole discretion. Preference will be given to boys who would not be able to attend Hereworth without the support of a bursary.
Entrance and Scholarship tests are held at the school in June/July each year, for all boys intending to enrol in Years 6 to 8 for the following year.
Details on all Scholarships and Bursaries, and application forms, are available from the school office, phone 06 877 8138. Please contact us with any queries. The Headmaster is always available to discuss the options that may best suit your family.
You are invited to apply in writing, including any relevant paperwork.
