The Pirates of Penzance – What unbelievable performances! Finally, it was here. After COVID delays, several months of rehearsals, and with a great sense of anticipation and excitement, our 2021 production of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ was performed this week to a restricted audience in the Anna Stuck Performing Arts Centre, as well as live-streamed to our community on Wednesday evening. All watching were mesmerised by the acting, singing, dancing and energy of our boys. Not only were the performances of the boys outstanding, but the colour and creativity of the costumes, make-up, set design and lighting, blended perfectly to provide a magnificent production under the direction of our talented Director of Performing Arts, Mrs Joanne Stevens. Special thanks for such a splendid outcome must go to her, for her overall creative vision, stage direction, costume, set, lighting and sound design, as well as all of the administrative and scheduling tasks, and the commitment to rehearsals that go along with bringing such a production together. We must also thank and acknowledge Mrs Delwyn McLeod, as key creative collaborator and choreographer. Her commitment to rehearsals over the past few weeks has been of significant assistance to Mrs Stevens and we greatly appreciate the energy and enthusiasm of these two teachers. Special thanks to Mr Jason Brittin, Mrs Bridget Eivers and Mrs Jane Read for their many hours of work with the set construction, set artwork, lighting and sound. Thank you to Mr Mark Weir for his advertising of the production and organisation of our first ever live streamed performance. Thanks must also go to all other teaching, support staff and band members, and the very large number of parents and community members, who all provided great assistance by giving generously of their time with costuming, make-up, front of house and class supervision to ensure the show would be such a success. It was a pleasure to sit back and watch the sparkle and fun of one of the world’s most famous Gilbert and Sullivan musical tales which has been enjoyed by many generations of theatre goers. Most deservedly, our Year 7 and 8 boys received a fabulous ovation at the end of each performance. I trust that the participation of our boys in this school production will be one of their fondest memories of their time at Hereworth. A full hearted bravo to everyone involved! It was a truly spectacular production. We’ll all be humming those catchy tunes for weeks to come! Trevor Barman Headmaster |
