A Lasting Legacy

Earlier this week, I interviewed a boy for entry to Hereworth in 2021, together with his parents. The father explained to me that his son would be the 4th generation to attend the school. He talked about his time at Hereworth - the teachers he could remember, the friends he had made and the impact the School had had upon him over the years he attended.

Yes, the School had taught him the 3 R’s of Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic but he felt that there was a great deal more that he had gained than just being literate and numerate (although he said the latter was of great importance to him as he ended up running the family farming business). He wanted his son to also benefit from being in an environment that fostered an all-round education, encouraging an excellent work ethic and participation, all underpinned by strong Christian values, and one that builds a strong sense of belonging amongst community members.

He mentioned that together with his strong home life, Hereworth had moulded his character, especially the experiences he had been involved in both in class and beyond, in particular his involvement in sport, in cultural events, in voluntary acts of care and compassion, in various camps, excursions and trips away – each had helped to broaden his experiences and nourish the formation of his character.

He also talked about the strong friendships he had formed at Hereworth and that he still sees these friends a couple of times a year. He remembered how each of his friends was able to be involved in some activity on offer – to find their niche – although, he said, there was not the array of opportunities available in his time, as there is for his son today.

The rich curricular and co-curricular life of Hereworth had definitely had an impact upon this former student, now a proud parent, and helped to prepare him for a successful future. Being involved in class or outside of class, no matter what the activity, is an effort worth making!
